Ventuno: Salvage Specialty Coffee

No excuse not to blog today apparently, because I have the day off and just wanted a completely lazy day. It has indeed been such an uneventful day I feel almost guilty for having it, so let's make up for the lack of productivity by blogging.

It's been so long since I did a cafe series entry that I've forgotten why I didn't number the past two entries, but since the last numbered one was 20, guess this is entry number 21. Recommended by friend and colleague KT, claiming it has the "best coffee" (hear that a lot, but really, there is no such thing as "best coffee", I just find that Single Origin or Campos are usually the safer options when it comes to coffee), we headed down to Artamon on a beautiful Saturday morning.

From fooood
The place itself is quite small and cosy, not too overdone in terms of interior deco, but enough to make it inviting. Never actually knew Artarmon was like a Japanese hub, with Japanese convenient stores (konbini!), restaurants and bookstores scattered around the suburb.

Moving on to the food, B (in the BLTS buddy group) got the Spicy Porky Beans. When I see beans on the menu, I will almost always not get it, though this one actually stopped me on my tracks for a while and had me considering it. I think it's the trauma of having to eat baked beans for breakfast when I was little and not particularly liking it very much, but S did try to convince me that real, homemade baked beans taste nothing like those canned gooey mess that reminds me of baby food. The one thing that stood out when I read this on the menu was pork (always a winner), and the soft egg (62 degree egg, which seems to be trending everywhere).

From fooood
I went for the pulled pork brioche instead... I have a thing for buttery bread, and this one was toasted with butter, making it even more of a winner. Pulled pork... that is one thing I need to put on my list of "to master" recipes, having never attempted it before, but so absolutely delicious. No complaints about this- the sprouts were freshly harvested (they had the whole pot of it, soil and all, in their shop), the onions were sweet and the pulled pork well flavored with the barbecue sauce, plus the extra side pickles. Satisfying brunch!

Then I get my capp and it's missing chocolate powder. It's not a capp without chocolate powder, as S agrees with me. B didn't seem to think it's a big deal... but how do you explain the importance of chocolate powder to a latte drinker right? =P

Jk. Overall though, the coffee tasted really different. They used Mecca beans... not a bad thing, but just different. So, B(L)TS, we need to get ourselves back to this place for breakfast/brunch.

nom nom porky beans

My colleague was saying that apparently a lot of cafes have tried in this area but this is the only one that's lasted the test of time.
